AGROFORESTRY PROGRAM IN SOUTH BUTON REGENCY
Since 2009, Lakamali has focused on planting trees as an effort to tackle climate change. We initiated the organization with the goal of introducing the agroforestry concept to farmers in South Buton. Agroforestry is a mixed-farm method where tree plantations are combined with agricultural crops.
Lakamali founder, Mr. Sahirsan, taught south buton farmers how to use the agroforestry method and the importance of the system to increase the welfare of farmers while at the same time helping the world cope with the climate crisis. At that time, Lakamali had successfully nursed 7,000 teak trees and planted them in South Buton.
In 2018, an expert from Mulawarman University assessed and observed how the agroforestry program done by Lakamali has grown as a forest in the South Buton regency. The teak forest was a habit for some plants and animals in the area has also being a source of farmers to looke for living.
Farmers have planted several fruits and trees below the teak forest. One of the trees that was harvested in 2023 was a cashew. The tree also generates cashew nuts that could be directly consumed or sold in the local market.
